Why it exists
A fiction author needs a website that does a handful of things well: show the books with their buy links, group them into series, introduce the author, carry a blog, collect newsletter signups, and look good enough that a reader, or an agent, trusts it.
WordPress makes you do the layout yourself. Squarespace makes you do it for a monthly fee. A designer costs a thousand euros or more. So this works the other way round from a page builder. You fill in your books, and a designed theme sets them out. You type; the platform designs.
Why it stays small
One person can look after a great many sites, as long as each one is simple. That is why there is a short list of designed themes rather than hundreds, why there are no plugins, and why help comes by email rather than chat. It is also why every site has limits, and why abandoned sites are cleared away.
Small is also what keeps it free. The page on why it is free has the numbers.
